Irrigation is key to global food security. World-wide, irrigation produces 40% of global food supplies. In Canada, only 8.5% of Canadian farms use irrigation; the rest rely solely on rain for crop watering.

Why do farmers irrigate?

Farmers irrigate to supplement the precipitation and offset the effects of drought and global warming. Irrigation improves crop yields and also provides opportunities to grow higher value crops, such as fruits and vegetables.

Carefully irrigating

Water and land are precious resources that need to be carefully managed. Farmers conserve water by irrigating on calm, cool, cloudy days so water isn’t wasted, maintaining irrigation systems to ensure there aren’t leaks, using water or energy saving nozzles, using drip irrigation on orchards and vineyards.
